Connection may be difficult if there are severe restrictions on the available ports or an operation of filtering equipment, programs. Each situation requires a separate analysis. You can contact our technical support, describing the situation in detail, and get recommendations on how to solve it.
Let's talk about the most popular situations:
Some ports are not available
In case of port limitation, the VPN can still successfully connect. We use several protocols; they work on different ports:
- OpenVPN TCP: 443 порт, port, also known as an SSL/HTTPS port. Most often these ports are the ones that can connect when the rest of the ports are limited.
- OpenVPN UDP: 1194 port;
- OpenVPN UDP on servers in Russia: 5004 port, a.k.a. RTP. Smaller chance of blocking.
- OpenVPN TCP/TUN: 995 port. Used by default in the Android client.
- IKEv2: UDP 500 port for a standard connection, UDP 4500 port for NAT;
- PPTP: GRE using 1723 port.
- L2TP: 1701 port when used without encryption,
- L2TP/IPSec: 500 port for a standard connection, 4500 port for NAT-traversal.
Select a protocol based on which ports are available on your network. The general rule is to start with OpenVPN TCP, as well as OpenVPN UDP, when connecting to servers in Russia. If these connections fail, try PPTP/L2TP.
VPN filtering
To prevent filtering by VPN characteristics, namely by headers at the time of connection, use the “Chameleon” function available in our application for Windows and Android.
In the Windows application, the option is turned on by going to Settings, General tab, checking the box "Chameleon" and being sure to select "Connection Type: OpenVPN TCP".
In the Android application, the option is found under Settings, Advanced.
Internet through a proxy
VPN can work through a proxy. Use the instructions "How to connect to a VPN through a proxy."
VPN is already used for the internet
Two reliable solutions:
- Transfer the VPN of your internet service provider to the router.
- Use a virtual machine to run a VPN on it.
- Programs conflicting with VPN
Some Internet service providers are trying to limit the use of VPN by clients. If this is implemented with the help of special programs installed on the computer supposedly “for the internet”, there are several ways to deal with this:
- Set up an internet connection without special programs or transfer settings to the router.
- Use a virtual machine to run a VPN on it.
